Muhudu Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Pottuvil, Ampara District. It is a fascinating destination where history meets natural beauty. Situated near a scenic beach, this historic temple provides visitors with a chance to explore Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage while enjoying its serene landscapes.

Believed to have been founded over 2,000 years ago during the reign of King Kavan Tissa of the Ruhuna Kingdom, Muhudu Maha Viharaya holds significant historical and religious importance. Ancient texts, like the Rajavaliya, suggest that this site may have been where Viharamahadevi, a key historical figure destined to become the queen of King Kavan Tissa, arrived. According to legend, after the city of Kelaniya was swallowed by the sea, Viharamahadevi was sent in a golden vessel to appease the gods and eventually reached Muhudu Maha Viharaya.

Visitors to the temple can explore its ruins, which include ancient stupas such as Seema Malaka and Avasa Geya, as well as intriguing stone statues of Buddha and various kings or deities. These remnants offer a glimpse into the architecture and artistry of the time. The combination of ancient structures and the peaceful beach setting creates a calm atmosphere perfect for reflection and exploration.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya is particularly appealing because of its tranquil location and rich historical background. Walking through the ancient ruins while feeling the breeze from the nearby beach allows visitors to appreciate both the historical significance and the natural beauty of the site.
