Bahirawakanda Viharaya is a peaceful Buddhist temple located in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This temple offers a perfect mix of cultural heritage and spiritual calm, making it a great place to visit for those interested in Sri Lanka’s history and natural beauty.

The temple is found in the lively city of Kandy. The name “Bahirawakanda” means “Mountain of Bahirawa” in Sinhala. Local legends say that Bahirawa is a guardian deity who protects the land. This adds a mystical touch to the already impressive site.

One of the main highlights of Bahirawakanda Viharaya is the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya. This beautiful Buddhist temple has become an important place for pilgrims. Its construction started in 1972 under the guidance of Ven. Ampitiye Dammarama Thero and was officially opened by President Ranasinghe Premadasa on January 1, 1993.

Visitors to Bahirawakanda Viharaya are greeted by a large Buddha statue that stands out against the landscape. This statue, visible from various parts of Kandy, represents peace and enlightenment. Its calm presence invites visitors to reflect and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the temple.

A special feature of Bahirawakanda Viharaya is its stunning view of Kandy. Located on a high spot, the temple offers impressive views of the city, surrounded by green hills and lush forests. Route from Colombo

Take bus route No. 01 (Colombo-Kandy) from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand in Pettah, Colombo. The journey typically takes about 3 to 4 hours. Upon arriving in Kandy, you can take a tuk-tuk directly to Bahirawakanda Viharaya, which is located about 1.5 km from the city center and is easily accessible.
