Ravana Ella (Ravana Falls), a stunning waterfall located in Sri Lanka’s scenic highlands, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Situated near the town of Ella, this waterfall is a popular spot in many Sri Lanka travel guides because of its breathtaking views and the vibrant local culture. What sets Ravana Ella apart is not just its natural beauty but also the fascinating legends surrounding it, making it a significant destination for those interested in Sri Lanka’s rich history.

The name “Ravana Ella” comes from King Ravana, a legendary figure from the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to the tale, Ravana, who was once the king of Sri Lanka, abducted Princess Sita and hid her in a cave behind the waterfall. This cave, known as Ravana Cave, is still accessible today and adds a touch of historical intrigue to your visit. A trip to Ravana Ella isn’t just about enjoying nature—it’s also about experiencing the ancient stories that are an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

Ravana Ella is particularly appealing because it’s easy to reach. Unlike other waterfalls in Sri Lanka that require long hikes through dense forests, Ravana Ella is just a short drive from Ella town. Despite its easy access, the waterfall remains peaceful and secluded, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. The waterfall cascades down about 25 meters (82 feet), creating a mesmerizing sight, especially during the rainy season when the water flow is at its strongest. The lush greenery and rugged rocks around the waterfall make it a perfect setting for photography. Visitors are often captivated by the natural beauty of the falls, making it a favorite among both tourists and locals.

When you visit Ravana Ella, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding area. Bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery, and don’t forget water and snacks, as there are limited facilities near the falls. For the best experience, try to visit early in the morning when the light is soft, and the crowds are smaller. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take the short hike to Ravana Cave, which adds an extra layer of excitement to your visit.
