What makes Isurumuniya special among the temples in Anuradhapura are its impressive stone carvings. The most famous of these is the “Isurumuniya Lovers” sculpture. This delicate carving shows a romantic couple and has attracted the interest of historians and visitors for many years.
The “Isurumuniya Lovers” sculpture is one of the temple’s most well-known features. It is celebrated for its detailed craftsmanship and the emotion it conveys. The figures are believed to be Saliya, the son of King Dutugemunu, and Asokamala, a commoner he loved. In addition to its artistic value, Isurumuniya holds deep spiritual significance. King Devanampiya Tissa built the temple in the 3rd century BCE as a monastery for 500 newly ordained monks. This was part of the king’s efforts to promote Buddhism across Sri Lanka. Located near the ancient Tissa Wewa reservoir, the temple offers a peaceful setting where visitors can reflect on Buddhist teachings and find tranquility.
Isurumuniya is open to visitors every day, with low and affordable entrance fees. For a more enjoyable visit, consider going early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the weather is cooler and the temple is less crowded.
Route from Colombo
Take bus route No. 4 (Colombo – Anuradhapura) or bus route No. 87 (Colombo – Vavuniya) from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand in Pettah, Colombo, and get off at the Market Junction (Market Handiya) bus stop in Anuradhapura. From the Market Junction bus stop, walk a few meters ahead and turn left. This road leads directly to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, about 1 km away.

From there, the eight sacred sites known as the Atamasthana—Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Abhayagiri Dagaba, Jetavanarama, Mirisaveti Stupa, and Lankarama—are within walking distance, or you can take a tuk-tuk. It’s recommended to start your journey by visiting the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya. The journey from Colombo to Anuradhapura takes about 4.5 to 5 hours.
