Hello, I’m Pulasthi, a 39-year-old from Sri Lanka, and I’d love to share a bit about myself. Growing up in a modest middle-class family in Sri Lanka has shaped who I am today. Life threw its challenges my way, especially after my father passed away. I took on the responsibility of caring for my mother, which gave me a deep sense of kindness, strength, and a strong appreciation for family.

I have fond memories of those early days. We didn’t have electricity, so we watched TV using a car battery. It was a black-and-white Sony TV, and we studied by the light of oil lamps instead of electric lights. Despite the lack of modern conveniences, it was a beautiful time—one filled with simplicity and contentment.

Reflecting on my childhood, I often think about how different life was back then. Growing up in Sri Lanka during the ’90s was a unique experience. It was an era largely untouched by modern technology, and life was much simpler. I remember playing in the peaceful paddy fields and eagerly waiting for the few TV programs that aired each evening. April was always a special time, as we celebrated Sinhala Avurudu (New Year). My mother would prepare traditional Sri Lankan foods like konda kevum and kokis, filling our home with the delightful aromas of these delicacies.

Community gatherings were the heart of life in those days. Whether it was weddings, funerals, or religious ceremonies, the entire village came together. Weddings were village celebrations where everyone shared in the joy, and funerals were marked by collective mourning and support from neighbors and friends. Religious events like Bana (sermons) and festivals were occasions for the whole community to unite, reflecting a strong sense of togetherness and shared culture. This close-knit community spirit was a vital part of our lives.

Looking back, I believe my generation was among the last to fully experience this idyllic and uncomplicated lifestyle in Sri Lanka. Before computers, smartphones, and the internet became a part of daily life, there was a purity in the way we lived that today’s fast-paced world seems to have lost. Many who grew up during that time share a nostalgic longing for a time when life was measured not by material wealth but by the depth of human connection and cultural traditions.

As I grew older, my connection to Buddhism deepened. What started as a part of my identity evolved into a way of life. I now spend a significant amount of time studying Buddhist teachings and immersing myself in the wisdom and tranquility they offer. This spiritual journey is more than just an intellectual pursuit; it’s a practice that guides my daily life toward inner peace and understanding.

One place that holds special significance for me is the sacred Ruwanweli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura. This sacred stupa is more than just a religious site; it feels like a living presence, where the spirit of Lord Buddha is ever-present. I visit Ruwanweli Maha Seya frequently, drawn by the profound sense of peace and spiritual connection it offers. When I’m there, I feel as though the teachings of the Buddha resonate all around me. Ruwanweli Maha Seya is my sanctuary, a place where I can truly experience the serenity and wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings come to life.

Beyond my spiritual pursuits, I have a strong passion for travel and archaeology. My curiosity drives me to explore the ancient ruins scattered across Sri Lanka, uncovering the stories of bygone eras. These archaeological treasures are not just remnants of the past; they are living testaments to the rich Sinhala Buddhist culture that has thrived for centuries. Through my explorations, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the unique cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka, where spirituality, history, and tradition intertwine seamlessly.

While I have a deep passion for travel and exploration, I currently face a significant limitation as I lack a quality camera to capture images suitable for publishing. My greatest dream is to explore every corner of this beautiful island with a camera that allows me to truly capture and share the essence of Sri Lanka through my own lens.

What started as a simple idea to document my experiences and reflections in a blog has grown into something much more significant. It feels more like a website rather than just a personal blog. I realized that I wanted to do more than just share my thoughts; I wanted to invite others, especially foreigners, to visit Sri Lanka and experience its beauty and culture firsthand. My vision extends beyond the written word—it’s about creating a bridge between Sri Lanka and the rest of the world, offering a glimpse into a land where ancient traditions and modern life coexist harmoniously.

Through my writings and endeavors, I aspire to showcase the unique aspects of Sri Lanka’s Sinhala Buddhist culture, its rich history, and the timeless beauty of its landscapes. My journey is not just about exploring the world around me but about sharing the essence of Sri Lanka with others. Whether through stories or reflections on a simpler past, my narrative is one of deep respect for my heritage and a desire to preserve it for future generations.
